Every team that I've coached has a some sort of red light/green light system where players must earn the right to take shots freely. We want everyone to contribute and earn a green light, but it's been helpful to stress the importance of taking good shots in games.
~ One way I have seen improvement in a players shooting was to tracking percentages at each spot and competing with their own numbers daily. An example would be track at spots that will shoot in the game so say they went 30-50 (60%) at each spot then the next day they would have to beat that to go to the next spot.
~ Another way is give them different spots to shoot at and challenge them to hit a set number say 10-13 from a spot before they can move to another spot. If they don't complete them set number at the next spot they are required to move back to the spot before. This keeps some pressure on not to have to go back.
~ Lastly there is a 2 on 2 shooting game where you partner up. Each group has a shooter starting at the 3 pint line and the other teammate rebounds until their teammate has hit a shot on 5 different spots on perimeter. When they finish they make a layup and switch spots with partner. Whatever team finishes first wins. It usually turns into a high intensity game, fun and emphasis on makes because your are competing against another team.
