A lot of current youth players have the tendency to dribble too much in the same place, oftentimes getting the ball stolen or failing to develop any sort of play.
What are some drills that you use to avoid this?
Here is one of mine:
Scrimmage Without Dribbling
5v5 halfcourt scrimmage
One team has pinnies
Offense starts in a 5-out formation or a 4-out 1 formation if there is a big man
Defense plays man-to-man
Players are not able to dribble the basketball until 5 consecutive passes are completed.
Each time a player receives a pass on offense, they will pivot and swing the ball away from their defender.
It is important that there is off-ball movement, including cutting and screening.
After 5 successful passes, the team on offense is allowed to dribble and will try to score. If there is a made basket, 2 or 3 points (depending on if it’s behind the 3-point line) are awarded and offense moves to defense. If there is another team of 5 defense, goes off and the other team moves to offense. If the offense does not score, the defense does not get a point, but the other rules of a turnover still apply.
On defense, 1 point is awarded for a steal or a forced turnover. After this, defense will move to offense and offense will either go off the court or move to defense.
